And we did!
I’m sure some of you are thinking: “Horse?! That’s unconscionable!” But, if you figure that every time you eat the Swedish meat balls at IKEA, you’re also [allegedly] eating horse meat, then that’s, like, 7 billion people who’ve eaten horse (because who can say “no” to the Swedish meat balls at IKEA; those things are delicious). And if you figure that hot dogs are comprised of some kind of mystery meat that may or may not be horse, then that’s another 7 billion people who’ve eaten a horse at some point in their lives. What we’re trying to say here is: get off your high horse and join us in our horse-eating escapades.
“You have got to try Hot’ Horse,” said one of our friends. “That’s like the thing to do in Ljubljana.” We were intrigued. So intrigued that we made it one of our registry items for our wedding (it was also the first thing to be purchased off our registry because, you know, we’re eating horse.)
Situated in the middle of Tivoli Park (which is beautiful, by the way), Hot’ Horse was the name of the place where we dined on some delicious horse burger. To order, we went up to an automated machine. We chose our main dish, the toppings and the sides from that machine. We paid (it takes credit or cash). Then a cook received the order and made our food.
There’s two things you need to know about Hot’ Horse: First, keep it simple. If you like your regular beef hamburgers with certain toppings, then do the same for the horse burger. Second, these freaking horse burgers are HUGE! Think American-sized portions on ‘roids. For those of you unfamiliar with American-sized portions, think JLo’s ass, but bigger. Or maybe Kanye West’s head (because he’s so full of himself). You will probably have to share your horse with someone or take it to-go.
As for taste, the horse burger was a little tougher and gamier than a regular burger. It had a savory sweet taste and felt leaner than ground beef. We thought it was finger-licking good and I wanted to go back for more. But we only had a few days in Ljubljana and we had to diversify our food choices while there (we want to eat EVERYTHING).
Frank is stuffing his face with some Seabiscuit. Now It’s Your Turn!If you’re planning to go to Ljubljana, give Hot’ Horse a try. Don’t go hemmin’ and yee-hawin’ about the moral implications of eating horse. The location we visited is at: Celovška 25, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenija.
Have you jumped on the horse bandwagon yet?
