This Wednesday’s Wonder: The Korean Bell of Friendship
A long time ago, 1976 to be exact, on a playground known as the “world,” two people –we’ll call them South Korea and the USA–became very good friends. They celebrated with a gift and sealed their friendship with a spit handshake…
That gift was the Korean Bell of Friendship. The Belfry of Friendship and the Bell ironically sit atop a cliff overlooking the ocean in San Pedro, a city known for being extremely friendly (it’s not) and is rung five times a year on special occasions.
At a time when the US was experiencing severe political backlash from the world, extreme inflation, an intense buttinsky issue in the Middle East and godawful fads like disco, the Korean Bell of Friendship was a nice gesture for our 200 year-old birthday (some cake with that bell would have been nice…).
Friends: they’re always there for you.
I meant the popular 90s sitcom, but your real friends are always there for you, too.
