This Wednesday’s Wonder: Those times when you travel and it gets real.
We arrived in Sarajevo very early in the morning. The first thing we decided to do was search for food. So, we walked. We ambled through the old part of the city, watched a game of very big chess, visited a book faire, found our first Sarajevo Rose and then we found the burek. Knowing that it was delicious in Belgrade, we went figured hey, why not to the burek here. We ordered two and walked up to the Yellow Bastion, which has a very expansive view of the city.
And that’s when it gets real.
Sitting on the wall of the Yellow Bastion, we saw not one — not two — but ELEVEN separate cemeteries. We went to visit the cemeteries and saw that most of them were people who passed away in the Bosnian War in the middle-ish 1990s. It’s shocking that these cemeteries have inevitably become part of Sarajevo’s landscape. But, it’s real.
