This Wednesday’s Wonder: Shoes on the Danube in Budapest, Hungary.
Where Zoltan Street meets the Danube in Budapest, there are a line of shoes. Not just any shoes, though. Shoes artistically displayed so that they look like they were taken off in a hurry. These were the makings of the Arrow Cross Army, a coalition that formed during World War II in Hungary. Their job was purely one thing: to kill those who were Jewish.
Now, it’s an artistically rendered memorial forever stationed on the banks of the Danube. It’s oddly quiet in that area, but the silence is completely understood. The shoes tell it all without a single word.
