Wednesday’s Wonder: Le Mont Saint-Michel

This Wednesday’s Wonder: The sunset on Mont St. Michel in Normandy, France.

Mont St. Michel has historically been a place of solitude and worship for monks, as well as a place for pilgrimage among the religious. During the French Revolution, it was also used as a prison. Now, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with over 3 million visitors every year.

At the time of this photo, the sun was setting and the tides had risen to practically isolate the little island from the rest of Normandy.

The best part about spending the night on a historical island: it’s like a big kid’s playground! But, this time I don’t feel the shame of being picked last in dodgeball. Suck on that, *Bobby Finnegan! (*names have been changed to protect the douchey).

    • Definitely! If you get the chance, stay overnight at mont st. michel! It’s like being transported back to medival France. =) But, with all the various modern conveniences, like tvs in the hotel room. Also, the church has a night tour, which is pretty cool.

  • Mont St. Michel is definitely magical. It looked like Oz in the distance as we approached over the Normandy countryside. We didn’t stay on the Mont, but just over the causeway. Staying on the Mont would have been worth it, but we also had a rental car to worry about. How did you get there?

    • Hi Suzanne! Thank you for commenting. We were also in our rental car driving from Bayeux and spent a majority of the day self touring the Normandy beaches. We arrived at Mont St. Michel around 6:30pm and parked at an area for island hotel guests. It was definitely worth it to walk around on the island after most people had left and for the summer night tour of the abbey. We left the next day around 10:30am before the insanity of the droves of tourists arrived.
