Wednesday’s Wonder: Koi Old Enough to School Your Gramps

This Wednesday’s Wonder: Koi Fish at the Zhishan Garden in Taipei, Taiwan.

You ever sat with your gramps while he spun on about the “good ol’ days.” Making dad noises as he ruminated (literally) about how gas used to be a nickel and candy was only a straw penny. You can’t quite figure out what he keeps chewing on, but listening on about how people used to go out and play on their bikes and store food in an “icebox” is more interesting than whatever stupid app is on your iPhone.

[Queue old timey music] Meet BAF, a koi fish in the Zhishan Garden in Taipei, Taiwan. Zhishan Garden is part of the National Palace Museum in Taipei. The museum is home to the jadeite cabbage, a famous piece of carved jade. It also houses most of the important artwork of Chinese history.

BAF got his name because he is one Big A – – F – – -. He’s probably bigger than any other koi fish in that pond. And probably older, too. Gramps remembers the icebox, but BAF remembers the invention of the writing press. Gramps remembers straw pennies. BAF can recall the invention of striking iron to form money.

We don’t really know how old that koi fish is, but koi fish have been known to live for a very long time. And BAF has stolen our hearts.

And most of our koi fish food. That’s alright, though. It only costs 10 straw pennies.

BAF, Taiwan There’s BAF. The one in the center with the biggest mouth.
