Wednesday’s Wonder: Guess Its Age!

This Wednesday’s Wonder: How old is this tiny bonsai?

My husband owns two bonsai trees. They’ve been part of the family for a few years now. These two bonsais have even lovingly been giving names. The tiny evergreen bonsai with the crooked trunk is named Tapsonbong and the other miniature version of a maple tree is Bob. Every morning, Frank goes outside to manicure them. He snips away dead leaves, applies water, sprinkles a little bonsai food (I’m guessing fertilizer, since it smells like that) and just generally cares for them.

“That’s so cute, you’re caring for that little baby tree!” I said, doting over the adorable babies. These replicas are literally both a tenth of the size (probably more like a twentieth) of their fully-grown counterparts. So, of course, they’re just babies? Right? RIGHT? “Oh look how cute you are, little baby,” I said in full-on gushing mama mode.

“This tree is 35 years-old,” said Frank.

“Oh.”

Much like the tree in our backyard, this little tree at a museum in Beitou, Taiwain may also be about 35 years-old, probably even a little bit older. It’s older than all y’all. Looks can be a little deceiving.

This tree is older than you, your gramps, your great gramps, a sea turtle, the eiffel tower... This tree is older than you, your gramps, your great gramps, a sea turtle, the eiffel tower…
