Vaporreto-ing Through Venice’s Main Thoroughfares: The Canals

Wouldn’t it be weird if we lived our lives entirely on water? Remember when you used to play the lava game where you couldn’t touch the floor? I would imagine living entirely on water would be something like that. If our main transportation was some kind of floating vehicle and we had to barter precious commodities like dirt in order to survive. Then we could slowly adapt to the water and have gills grow out the sides of our necks. It could be like we lived in a water world. This is literally a concept that has never been thought of before… Why oh WHY hasn’t Hollywood hasn’t made this into a movie? …Or have they…

It’s also a little how Venice feels minus the totally-submerged-under-water thing. Venice’s bus system is called the Vaporreto and they are a system of water boats. This is a story of our journey on the Vaporreto through the Venice Main Canal. Remember all the places you could go on the train? Here’s all the things we could see on the water bus:

The Palais de Doge The Palais de Doge. So pretty. The Palais de Doge. So pretty.

The Palais is easy to walk to and it’s right next to San Marco Square. Inside is beautiful ceiling art. Outside, the sun splashing the wall is so pretty.

Museum that Made us Laugh

Italy has a lot of famous Renaissance art. But, did you know it also has a lot of hilarious art? From the Doge Museum, we walked to the Museo Correr. There, we got to see this magic:

What a way to go... What a way to go…

What is it, you might ask? I. don’t. know. I’m sure at the time of its creation, the sculpture probably represented a fued of some kind and caught the last minutes of a guy about to die in said political feud (…still can’t understand why he’s naked or how he somehow landed on a pole…it was a million to one shot). But, today, it’s just plain hilarious. We love finding hilarious art. We even often get asked how we find such funny art. So, I present to you, The Guide to Making Serious Art Seriously Funny.

Step 1: Have the mind of a child, but in an adult’s body.

Step 2: See Step 1.

Island Hopping in Venice

Frank and I went on a cruise along the Mexican Riviera. On the third day of our week-long vacacionita, a hurricane hit somewhere in I-don’t-know Timbuktu or something. The ocean waters were barfy, to put it mildly. Now, before we went on the cruise, we invested in some seasickness medicine. But, we’re boss and didn’t even take it.

There’s no point to this little story except that you won’t need medicine to take the Vaporreto. It was pretty much smooth sailing.

The view of Venice from San Giorgio Maggiore Island is lovely. There’s also a Church of San Giorgio, which is a lot like other churches in Europe…So…there’s that.

Taking a gondola? Forget that, we taking a bus....A vaporreto Bus! Taking a gondola? Forget that, we taking a bus….A vaporreto Bus! San Giorgio from up high. San Giorgio from up high. San Giorgio. Bella. San Giorgio Maggiore Island. Bella.

Isola della Giuddeca is a short Vaporreto ride west of San Giorgio Maggiore. What”s amazing about this island is that it’s just like Venice, but without a lot of travelers. There are pretty buildings, tiny alleyways and a nice serene air to it.

That one lone seagull. He must like it here on Giuddeca. So peaceful. That one lone seagull. He must like it here on Giuddeca. So peaceful. Face in the wall. Face in the wall.
Rialto Bridge

Everything about Venice is famous. But I think the most famous thing was the Rialto Bridge. We deduced this by the sheer amount of people standing on it at any given time. At midday, there were anywhere from 100 to 573,473,946,394 people on the bridge. At dusk, there were anywhere from 50 to 8,409,473,853 people on the bridge. At midnight, there were approximately four people on the bridge. My point is, although it’s packed with the people, the view of the Rialto Bridge is breathtaking from the Vaporreto.

So many people. So many people. Your friendly neighborhood Vaporreto. All the nice and half the price. The Grand Canal

So, there you have it: a way to get around Venice that doesn’t cost a terrible amount of money.
