The Little Things (Literally) are Pretty Awesome

We had a plan.

Our plan was to visit the House of Terror in Budapest (terrifying) and then make our way to the City Park.

This was our plan and we did just that.

Then we stopped. And stared. The object of our adoration was none other than a family of half-grown ducks. They were the sweetest most adorable little things we ever did see. They were completely unaware of anything around them…Unless that thing happened to have food in their hands. We just so happened to be that thing with food in our hands.

Oh hello, cute little things Oh hello, cute little things The City Park The City Park

I suppose it’s easy for people to get swept up by cute things, especially if those things are little and a member of some different species that are typically considered “cutie patooties.” These ducks fit the bill (ah, it’s a pun!) and we were swept up. The thing is, this memory, this one specific instance of my newlywed husband and I stopping to feed the duckies, is a memory we will never forget. It stands out so distinctly because it was never on a plan. We didn’t plan to feed a duck, but it happened anyway. It made Budapest’s city park stand out so distinctly in our travel memories.

Americans and some other countries really aren’t given that much vacation time. Yet, we tote that as a badge of honor. Some people are actually happy they didn’t take their vacation because then they get to keep that at the end of the year as a little bonus. Some don’t even get the little “bonus” if company policy says so. For those who do take their vacation time, it’s sometimes so short that it requires the utmost of planning to see everything you want to see. We get that. We completely and totally understand the concept of planning to a T, even though we’re lucky to have careers that give us more than two weeks to travel. But, it’s nice to remember are the little things on our travels. These little things are actually pretty awesome.

Now it’s Your Turn
Bring some extra change to the City Park to feed the ducks. The park is located at 1146 Budapest, Kós Károly sétány, Hungary.

  • I completely agree that it is so often the quiet moments and the unexpected diversions that wind up being really memorable when traveling. Maybe it’s because we haven’t spend ages agonizing and plotting over them and so they give us a chance to really be surprised and without expectations, or maybe it’s because they are the moments where we actually take the time to go slow and enjoy where we are and what we’re doing. Either way, they really do wind up being the most precious moments in the end (and are a good reminder for all of us planners out there to release our hold a bit and not overschedule ourselves!).
